Vintage Summer Swing

Vintage Summer SwingSally and Cian gave us the tagline for their wedding themselves, when we asked them to sum up their day in three words, and they came up with the delectable ‘vintage, summer and swing.’ The wedding is a lovely summer affair in the heart of London’s east end, with relaxed vintage styling that gave them the informal celebration of their love for one another that they wanted in front of family and friends. Oh, and a Swing band (because this is a couple that love swing) that got all the guests dancing into the early hours.

Things got off to, (and we quote Sally here), a ‘spectacular’ start, with an engagement which showed such thought and old school romance, it is enough to make anyone envious that they either didn’t think of it themselves, or they weren’t on the receiving end of something similarly magical. On one of their early dates, Sally and Cian had stumbled across The Barbican Conservatory, which, while open to the public for a few hours on a Sunday, is a rare London Oasis that not many people know about (until now that is…). The two had had a lovely time wondering through the exotic plants and trees, and had been a memorable date for the two of them.

20120623-433 Sally & Cian's DIY East London Wedding Fast forward to December 2011 when Cian then carefully planned that just of the two of them ‘just happened’ to be leaving a Christmas production at the Barbican they could maybe ‘just see’ if it happened to be open after an event ‘or something.’ He of course knew full well that not only would it be open, they would have the whole place to themselves and it had been decked out with fairy lights – fairy lights that made a reappearance at their wedding reception -, champagne, oh and as luck would have it, a moonlight December night. With an Events Manager feigning concern as to whether they could go in, claiming an event had just finished, (and then winking conspiratorially to Cian as the couple went in), Sally really couldn’t say no (and states that her best decision in the whole wedding process was ‘choosing my man’).

The ceremony itself was held at the Bethnal Green Town Hall Hotel, which has stunning art deco styling (which the couple later echoed in their table plan). The ceremony itself was intimate (we love the layout of the room used for the ceremony ensuring a perfect view for every guest).

20120623-148 Sally & Cian's DIY East London Wedding The overall styling for the day itself was intentionally casual: shortly after they became engaged Sally and Cian had been to Brazil, where they had thought, at their leisure, about the kind of day that they wanted to have, and when they wanted to have it (2012 it was decided, and then the date was firmed up on the availability of one of the bridesmaids who could make the 23rd June!). The emphasis was on them, their friends and family and what made them the couple that they are.

20120623-172 Sally & Cian's DIY East London Wedding Sally tried on lots of traditional wedding dresses with her sister, but it was not until she tried on the dress that she chose that she felt that she firstly had something that suited her, and second that she felt comfortable in. The bracelet that she wore had been an engagement gift from Cian’s parents from a Malaysian designer, and she had searched long and hard for a necklace and earrings that tied in with it. Sally ended up making the earrings herself in the end to achieve the look that she wanted. The beautiful fascinator-come-veil was designed and crafted by her sister’s friend from ideas and suggestions that Sally came up with.

20120623-449 Sally & Cian's DIY East London Wedding The couple had not intended there to be specific colour scheme or theme, and decorated The Tab (a complete gem of a London venue which includes very rare private, outside space) with an eclectic mix of colourful bunting, jewel coloured pom poms and home made posy’s of informal Fresia’s and Peony’s. Seeing the finished look, the colourful decorations, the beautiful corals and oranges, even the deep red lining of Cian’s suit and the rich colours in the mini puddings it all creates a very coherent but laid-back look (even if it did all come together by happy accident!).

20120623-209 Sally & Cian's DIY East London Wedding Continuing the theme of a relaxed and informal day that truly reflected them and their style, the curry that the couple had for their sit down meal was, according to Sally, (who openly admits to having something of a thing for curry), the ‘easiest choice’ to make when planning the day. This did conversely throw up the toughest decision for planning the day: what to drink (which led to a lot of utterly selfless research choosing the best wines to suit the meal, as well, Sally says, of the purchase of lots and lots of beer). Instead of more traditional wedding favours, the couple had, over years and lots of holidays, amassed a formidable collection of sea shells, and assigned a shell to each guest that they thought they would suit them (and serve as a conversation starter for guests).

The standout memory from the day itself for Sally and Cian was as they entered the outside space at the Tab straight from the ceremony at the Town Hall Hotel, and were barraged with a storm of confetti, and for the first time got to see the faces of all their friends and family. From these gorgeous images we can see why.

Sally’s second dress of the day (and we love a second dress!), was a very full skirted red dress, giving a nod to Cian’s Hungarian heritage where it is tradition for the bride to change into a red dress, and for men at the wedding to dance spinning the bride for an entire song. The couple choose Buenos Sera by Louis Prima for the first dance together setting the tone for a night of Swing.

Dancing

And talking of swing, Cian and Sally rate the choice of Jivin’ Miss Daisy for the evening entertainment as one of their best choices; ‘they were incredibly slick and got everyone up and dancing’.

20120623-495 Sally & Cian's DIY East London Wedding In terms of pearls of wisdom that they learnt planning their wedding, Sally says to always listen to the experts: Having been forced to find another venue with less than 3months to go, not only was The Tab available, the events company that assisted with the planning and menu, were so full of informed, fantastic advice, that they made the change easy for them. You’ll only have one wedding, and they’ve been involved in hundreds, so really do know their stuff: it makes sense to listen to what they know.

To finish things here is Sally and Cian’s favourite images from the day. Thanks so much for sharing it with us at Love Scarlett x
